Just about a month…

I said 2 months and it turned out to be just about one month. We had 2 inches of sloppy wet stuff on the ground last weekend. I had to buy a new pair of Sorels to keep the feet dry. Unfortunately, it seems I’m a perfect 12.5 shoe size. 12’s are too tight and 13’s just a little roomy, even with large wool socks. Oh well, better a little room then looking like one of those Asian women with their foot origami. Ewwww!

We also broke the consecutive rain day record of 31 days from 1991. We’re now heading into our 33rd day of at least a measurable amount of rain. Right now shooting for the 45 days in a row with trace amounts of rain record. Sweet!!! The sun you say? I’ve forgotten what it looks like. Gollum!!!!

Knock, knock. Who’s there? Fall!!!

Yeap, fall is here. Got some shots of the glacier again and looking at the pics you can definitely tell that fall is knocking on the door. Just walking the dog around the block the roads are starting to get covered in leaves. I give it 2 months max before the snow starts to fall.

Sailboats vs. Motorboats

So, I’ve spent the last couple of weekends looking at boats. I found a few stinkers, but also some very nice looking and in decent shape trawler yachts. However, what I haven’t found as of yet is a decent sailboat. I was very close to putting an offer down on a nice 36′ Hershine trawler, but after considering the costs of fuel and the resale values in a few years I decided to wait for decent enough sailboat to come along. Oh well, going to be a bit longer before I get out on the water.

Seriously, it’s raining…

Yeap, it’s raining again. I came out of work today and luckily I had actually brought a jacket this time as it was dumping pretty good. Now, the fun thing about the rain up here is that it doesn’t always fall straight down. The wind was coming up the channel at a pretty good clip, so the rain falls vertically which makes your pants extra wet. Sweet!

On a side note, I made some changes to the theme template which hopefully will help the readability a tad.

Back to the rain.. .

Well, it was a rainy Labor Day, so I spent it upgrading Wordpress and finding some bugs in WPG2. Changed themes for good measure. Snow is already falling on the peaks near the glacier and winter is knocking on the door. Welcome to September :)

The sun is shining…

It’s been a craptastic summer if you wanted to see the sun a lot. There have been maybe 4-5 days of nice sun since Memorial Day and we haven’t seen the high 70’s since before Memorial Day. However, today was gorgeous. I finally made it up the Granite Creek trail and wow…just amazingly beautiful up there. Check out the gallery for some pics of that trail.

awesome movie quote…

One of my favorite quotes:

I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched c-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those … moments will be lost in time, like tears…in rain. –Roy Batty; The Blade Runner

Kubuntu 7.10 = Fail for your parents

I had installed Kubuntu 7.10 a week ago so I could ssh tunnel some remote X apps that FreeBSD doesn’t have native support for. This means you Adobe (Flash) and VMware (server console)! Anyways, this morning for some reason the box had reverted back to it’s old DHCP assigned IP address vs. the one I had set in /etc/network/interfaces . Yes, I did restart the network service when the initial change was made. However, I will give Kubuntu the benefit of the doubt and let that pass. However, when I tried to check the network preferences I found out that the system settings center is not installed by default. Ummm… Joe user won’t know to edit /etc/network/interfaces to switch from DHCP to static addressing. Okay, fine. I look for the package manager. Nope. It’s not installed either. So, one apt-get install kde-systemsettings later I have the “System Settings” panel. I go to Network Settings, enter my password for admin mode and error. You don’t have the knetworkconf module installed. Ummm, yeah. Good call devs. So, back to konsole and apt-get install knetworkconf and all is well.

Kubuntu is supposed to take after Ubuntu and be a moderately user friendly for your parents distro. It failed. In review: There is no package manager installed by default that I can find in the Kmenu. Although there is kcontrol for most things, why is the kde-systemsettings package and some of its modules not installed by default? Just seems silly to me.

Before I get shredded, just let me state that this a comment on a small section of Kubuntu which in my mind makes it unusable for the average user. Personally, I run FreeBSD as my desktop and server of choice, followed by Xubuntu if Linux is a must have or Debian for a server. Solaris takes 3rd place and Windows is a long, long shot at 4th. I love KDE apps and even though I run XFCE as my primary desktop, the K apps are always installed and I’m really looking forward to KDE 4.1!

Admin talk…

A good quote for the sys admins of the world:

When a problem occurs on a Windows machine the Windows admin says "What happened?" When a problem occurs on a UNIX machine the UNIX admin says "What did I do?"

Thanks Chris.

It’s cold outside…

It’s cold and it will be snowing. The winds are howling around the house with gusts up to 80mph thanks to the Taku Glacier and we’re supposed to get up to 2ft of snow between now and Sunday night. Netflix only delivered me one DVD, so we’ll have to read some books and just stay inside. Not to mention, I’m a little under the weather so hiding out under the covers sounds nice :)
